Your Wheel of Life
Whenever it is time for us to flip to a new month in our calendars, there is always this feeling of, “My goodness, where did that month go?” And it’s not just the months that seem to have a habit of flying by; the days and weeks do too. Sometimes it can be easy to lose focus on our goals and get caught in the “busy-ness” of life. We were introduced to a very simple exercise recently, and it has helped us to get beyond this “busy-ness”.Imagine your life as a wheel. Divide that wheel into 6-8 segments, and name them based on the most important areas of your life. Think family, health, business, education, career, community, faith, etc. Next, go through each segment individually, and fill it in based on how satisfied you are with that area of your life. If you’re completely satisfied with your family-life, then fill it in.
If you’re only partially satisfied with your health/fitness, then partially fill it in, etc., etc. (You get the idea.)Keep in mind; no one else has to see this if you don’t want them too. This is a very personal exercise, and it works better if you’re completely honest with yourself. When you’re done the exercise, what does your wheel look like? If you were to roll your wheel down the road, would it be a smooth and even ride, or would it be a rough and lumpy ride? The next step is to reflect on the areas that you haven’t filled in all of the way, and think about what actions you could take to feel more satisfied in that area of your life. Set very deliberate goals that specifically targets these areas of your life. While this is a great tool to help you identify areas of your life that could use more focus, putting this tool into motion is truly up to you. Mapping out goals is one thing, but execution is another. Yes, life is busy. Make a point to spend some time on this exercise. It will be ten minutes well spent.
