Better than you thought
We’ve just passed New Year’s and, if you’re like most people, you’ve done two things. The first is that you made some sort of resolution or promise for 2014; and the second (statistically) is that you’ve already broken it. Apparently, there’s an 87% chance that you’re off your target by the end of the month. Why do we share this? It’s simple: the reason that most people slip away from their goals is that their goals aren’t that important to them. Think about it this way; if you’re pursuing something because you think you should, or someone else thinks you should, that’s not nearly as compelling as having a burning desire in your gut that you can’t stop thinking about and that you’re going to figure out no matter what! The common problem to people not achieving goals, among a handful of other things, is that they have poorly formed goals – they have goals that don’t move them. It’s for that exact reason that we start our planning “above the planning horizon” and explore what you really value, what your picture of the future looks like, what is your mission and how would that break down to goals. By starting with the big picture, you have better odds of setting something in motion that really matters to you – something that isn’t a should; something that is a must.2014 is full of promise and you undoubtedly have some expectations for the year. But it can be even better than you thought it would if you take a bit of time and get clear on What and Why, before you figure out How, Who and When. Welcome to a New Year.
